Memorial day at the soldiers home

Two Great Events

one amazing place

ANNUAL MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY

Monday, May 25, 2026 | 9:00 a.m.

Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee hosts an annual Memorial Day ceremony at 5000 W. National Avenue to honor nearly 40,000 fallen veterans, featuring a 9 a.m. concert and a 9:25 a.m. ceremony at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The event includes flag placement, a flyover, and taps.

This is an open event, registration not required.

VOICES OF WOOD NATIONAL CEMETERY

Selection of stories of those buried in these hallowed grounds, from Civil War to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Monday, May 25, 2026 | 1p.m.

5000 W. National Ave, Milwaukee, WI

Meet at the northwest corner of Wood National Cemetery near the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, VA Medical Center grounds.

Parking in lots E-29, E-30, E-31 (see map).

(NOTE - there is a Brewer Home Game that day, at 1:00 p.m.  It is highly recommended that you use National Avenue to enter and exit the VA Medical Center grounds - the north entrance to the VA Medical Center is highly congested or closed off during home games).

Several of the stories that will be presented come from the book Out at the Soldiers Home written by Elizabeth Corbett. Elizabeth and her family lived on the Milwaukee Soldiers Home grounds from 1891 to 1916, when her father served as Home Treasurer. She wrote her memoir in 1941, and as far as we know this is the only memoir describing some of the old Civil War soldiers and their lives at a National Soldiers Home.

MPA is pleased to offer this book, reprinted in 2008 with archived photos added, for $20. If you order and pre-pay for this book, it can be delivered to you at “Voices of Wood National Cemetery” presentation without added shipping costs. We cannot sell the book at Wood National Cemetery.

Use code SHTOUR to avoid shipping costs.
